Commonly referred to as Namibia's Matterhorn, the Spitzkoppe, is a vast granite dome rising 700m above the desert plains between Windhoek and Swakopmund. The south-western side is the same height as the Empire State Builing in New York. The almost vertical 380m of rock without ledges or breaks is the highest continuous rock wall in all Southern-Africa.

The Brandberg which means in Afrikaans, "burning mountain", is a 750 square km wilderness of rock and has a rock art gallery without equal in Africa. Executed on the walls of the overhangs and on the boulders are some 43 000 rock paintings.
